EARTH WORKS - 73-74
"MEDITATIVE SPACE – PULPIT-ATION" / 73-75* (20 loose sand canvases, creating a circular space within a dense city area; 2.5: 1.5 m. each)
The "October war" (73) was the "energy crisis" war & for me as an artist there was only one issue, transforming the so-called "art object" from a decorative object into a way of life, independent of the products of consumer society. During that period I was involved with the group "Art & Science" that predicted a "computerized society" manipulated by a system in which the human body would not be needed and, therefore, will deteriorate, except for the brain. I started collecting sands from various areas, from city beach areas & from desert spots in what became expeditions of integration into nature. This spoke for the silent voices, contradictory to the male "military" ones, which dominate space and people. I laid these sands on canvases with my hands, body movements and solar energy, creating topographies of layers, almost like a human body, holding up the suppressed energy-life-system, under the monochrome skins. While the workers in front of my roof-studio were finishing a 20-story concrete-building, I completed 20 hand-made canvases, creating my own space, a flexible and intimate one, protecting me against the city of concrete .
